Here at Vesuvius!

Here at Vesuvius, we love our Pizza and Italian food in general.  We named our restaurant after the famed volcano that borders the city of Naples where pizza was invented. In this blog, we wanted to highlight some of the interesting facts around pizza, how it has changed over the years and it places in American culture today!

Origins of Pizza

As mentioned above, what we know as pizza was invented in the city of Naples in Italy. There have been different variations of pizza like meals dating back to 700 A.D but not exactly as we know pizza today. In 1889 a pizza maker from Naples was credited with creating the first “Margherita Pizza” in honor of Italy’s princess, Margherita. Not only named after the princess, it donned the colors of the Italian Flag: Tomatoes being red, White being Mozzarella, and Green being basil. It is now known today as the classic and quintessentially authentic, Italian pizza.

Pizza in America

Americans love pizza. Did you know that each year, Americans buy roughly 3 billion pizzas! And during the Super Bowl on average 12.5 million pizzas are delivered! It makes sense as Italian Americans make up the 4 largest group of European decedents in the US. Additionally, pizza is downright delicious if made correctly. Which brings us to regional pizza in the US. Chicago is famed for deep-dish, New York has their “New-York” slice so what does New England have to offer? New England tends to boast Greek or an Italian-American style pizza. We here at Vesuvius we serve Italian-American pizza with only the freshest ingredients ensuring top quality products. Our selection of specialty pizzas includes the likes of the Red Vesuvius, a spicy 5 meat pie and our North End Pizza featuring fresh tomato, prosciutto, garlic. Olive oil and fresh mozzarella.

People appear to be saying wonderful things about the food here at Vesuvius.

Personally I have tried the cheeseburger several times and they are really delicious, in my opinion. The pizza is great as it is in Marblehead.
